On the morning of December 7, at the invitation of our functional gene group, Professor ABDUL QAYYUM from the University of Zakariya, Pakistan, visited our institute and made a speech entitled "Introduction of Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics and Cotton status in Pakistan". Peng Jun, Director of the Science and Technology Management Department, presided over the report meeting, and Zhengzhou, Hainan, Xinjiang, and Yangtze River Research Center watched the report live. Director Peng Jun expressed his warm welcome to Professor ABDUL QAYYUM's visit and introduced him to the development history of China Cotton Institute, the development of China's cotton industry and the collection and research of cotton germplasm resources.

At the conference, Professor ABDUL QAYYUM highlighted the current status of the cotton industry in Pakistan wehre one of the world's four largest cotton producers, is producing high quality cotton. Pakistan has a tropical climate with high temperatures and relatively rare precipitation. The annual precipitation is less than 250 mm, accounting for more than three-quarters of the country's total area. Professor ABDUL QAYYUM completed the identification of genetic diversity of cotton quality and drought resistance and heat resistance through the scanning of diverse cotton germplasm resources in Pakistan. On this basis, cotton quality resilience breeding was carried out, and the promotion area expanded year by year.

After the meeting, Professor ABDUL QAYYUM visited the National Key Laboratory and the experimental bases of the old department, and expressed appreciation for the scientific research strength and scale of the China Cotton Institute. He asked in detail the identification work and intermediate experiments of cotton resistance breeding. He said that the visit was very rewarding and not only helped China and Pakistan learn from China's experience, but also effectively promoted friendly exchanges and cooperation between China Cotton Institute and Zakaryia University. Finally, they expressed their desire to deepen the exchange of germplasm resources, exchange visits between students, and further establish cooperative relationships.

ABDUL QAYYUM, PhD, Ph.D. Director of the Key Laboratory of Plant Genetics and Breeding, University of Zakariya, Pakistan, has been engaged in cotton resilience breeding for many years, involving drought resistance, heat tolerance, salinity and flooding, and other aspects of molecular regulation of cotton germplasm diversity, especially in Cotton seed oil and protein composition has made great achievements, and more than 40 papers have been published in international journals.
