Education Background
Dr. Wang Kunbo received his BSc degree in Agronomy (1982) from Huazhong Agricultural College, Wuhan, China, and his PhD in Crop Genetic Germplsm (2009) from Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing, China.

Research Area
He has been engaged in research program of cotton germplasm in Institute of Cotton Research of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (ICR-CAAS) since 1982. He is leader of innovative team of Cotton Germplasm Innovation and Utilization in ICR-CAAS. The innovative team consisting of 14 scientists conducts or coordinates the national research programs and has contributed with the outstanding achievements of collection, maintenance, enhancement and providing utilization on cotton genetic resources under supervising the National Wild Cotton Nursery in Hainan Island and the National Mid-term Genetic Bank of Cotton in Anyang.

He established the nursery in 1982 and collected nearly 80% cotton species (Gossypium spp) with over 600 stocks and to reserve them perennially in the nursery. He also developed about 700 accessions with good genetic traits from wild cottons and distribute them to cotton breeders in China which resulted in 172 novel upland cultivars. So he won the second prize of National Sci-tech Progress in 2006. He established the technologies of natural occurs of haploid cotton via a called SEMGAMY line, and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) to cotton somatic or meiotic chromosomes and even to cotton DNA fibers. His group has identified single chromosomes in about 20 species, constructed some cotton molecular cytogenetic maps, and sequenced 26 cotton chloroplast genomes.

Publications
He has published more than 160 scientific papers including one paper titled “The draft genome of a diploid cotton Gossypium raimondii” in Nature Genetics in 2012. He wrote the scientific book “Winter Season Cotton Planting in Hainan Island” in 2011.
